ActivExpressions

Choose a lesson in which you used your Expressions voters. Describe the lesson and how you used the voters. How did it go? Success? Glitches? What might you do differently next time?

I think the best thing that I did BEFORE I used the ActivExpressions in a staff meeting was set it up ahead and time and practice 2-3 times to ensure that I knew how to handle issues that might come up. It was great to have two other ITP folks in the audience as back up if I had difficulty. It was also interesting to see the difficulty that some folks had with the technology. They just didn't know how to text and it caused GREAT frustration for them. So, we all learned.

I used the ActivExpressions with my adaptation of the School of Rock lesson we did in the summer. I had the kids create their rock band and then we used the Expressions to vote the winner of the Battle of the Bands. It went really well. I had no glitches. The students really got into the assignment because they knew beforehand that they would get to vote. I think that it added a motivation factor for success that would not have been there otherwise.

I have the ActiveExpressions 3 or 4times in my science class. I used the activeExpressions both as a pre and post assessment. The only difficulty or frustration I had was the time consuming nature of texting in responses, students were frustrated as well.

I have used them several times now. It has gotten easier and the kids are better at registering than they were at the beginning. The auto shut off/sleep is an annoyance to the kids and I have learned to use a timer or just close the vote on some of the texting questions otherwise i get kids writing whole sentences when i want one word.
