FLIP!!

How are you using this in your classroom? What are some ideas to integrate this into our classes in a meaningful way?

I haven't started yet, but I have asked PTSA to buy me 10 more so students can tape each other before giving speeches so they can see what they look like and if they need more practice.

This summer I did a scaffold on Oral Reading Fluency using the flip camcorder. Wich would be very similar to something you could do with speeches, but applied to drama, choral readings, or just practice with reading out loud.

I showed the staff at my school the "goodie" we received at ITP, the FLIP. Several of my colleagues have borrowed the camera. Here are ways it was used:
* music teacher recorded students original compositions played. She's thinking of using it as an assessment piece for the State/District
* 3rd grade teacher used it to record students singing a salmon song and shared it with parents during Curriculum Night to show them one of the ways the life cycle was being taught
* I've used the FLIP to record experiments with AIR: differences with parachutes and what my students discovered.
* I've also recorded how my students were using the ActivBoard to share with parents in my class during Curriculum Night since our PTSA goal for the year is to raise enough money to provide ActivBoards for every classroom.

I've been sort of slow to start this year due to problems with connecting the tablet to my ActivBoard...I think I'm up and running now! The only thing I've done so far with the FLIP camera was to take it on one of our explorations through the wetlands and record students showing and describing what they found. They loved it and it helped support my "leave organisms in their natural habitat" speech. We did however have trouble hearing students when we played the clips in the classroom--hopefully I can figure this problem out.

So far I have flipped twice. We had an assembly on the second day of school so I recorded a 4th grade music class as they practiced our school song. I played it several times so the kindergarten kids could begin to learn it and participate in the school-wide singing at the assembly. The second time I recorded my just-5 year old so his parents could see how inappropriate his behavior is- too bad they didn't care!

I haven't started using my Flip yet. I teach 2 1/2 day K sessions this year, and to be honest, I haven't even thought about it--no time!!! I would like some ideas as to how I might use the Flip for our upcoming conferences in November.

I've begun to record my student DRAs on the flip camera, but am not reviewing them yet. I took the flip camera out to our wetlands, but it was too hard to manage student behavior while recording what the kids were seeing. I'm looking forward to using the flip camera in the classroom more with the DRAs.

I am using my flip for filming student's retelling of a short story. I will share the film with my students. I hope to film them 3 or 4 times during the year.

I haven't used my camera yet. I look forward to meeting this week and hearning what everyone else is doing with the camera. I need inspiration!

In my health classes I had my students dramatically present the digestive system to their peers. I used the FLIP to record these presentations and later used the video as a means to grade their presentation skills. I also hope to link the "gems" on my website.

I am planning to use this in my ProCert classes to monitor students growth and to demonstrate appropriate evidence in student voice.
